The legendary action film, often regarded as one of the greatest of all time, makes its UK debut on 4k uhd and blu-ray on 21 October 2024. As the BFI’s best-selling Blu-ray/DVD/VHS release, Seven Samurai will premiere at BFI IMAX on 26 September, kicking off the UK-wide art of action season, with screenings across selected cinemas in the UK and Ireland starting 27 September.
This 1954 classic, nominated for two oscars and three BAFTAs, has inspired filmmakers from George lucas to steven spielberg, paving the way for remakes such as John sturges’ iconic the Magnificent Seven (1960). Newly restored in 4k by Toho, Japan, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2024.
Available in a limited edition 2-disc set, the home entertainment release includes a beautifully designed perfect-bound book, four exclusive postcards, and a double-sided poster. Special features consist of a newly recorded commentary and enhanced english subtitles.
The plot follows 16th-century farmers who, upon facing relentless attacks from ruthless bandits, seek help from an elderly masterless samurai, played by Takashi Shimura. He rallies a team of warriors to defend and train the villagers, showcasing riveting performances and breathtaking battle sequences, especially from toshirô mifune as the peasant-turned-samurai.
Supported by the BFI Film Audience Network (BFI Fan) and national lottery funds, the art of action season runs from October to December 2024, celebrating the intricate art of action choreography that captivates audiences worldwide.
